RE: ENTHRONEMENT OF BISHOP MAKSIM
Alhambra, CA Please be advised that His Grace, Bishop
Longin, Serbian Orthodox Bishop of America and Canada NGM will preside
at the enthronement of His Grace, Bishop Maksim, newly elected Bishop of
Western America on Sunday, July 30, 2006 at Saint Stevens Cathedral,
1621 West Garvey Avenue in Alhambra, California. The Liturgy of
Enthronement will begin at 10:00 a.m. and will be followed by a luncheon
in the Cathedral Social Hall.
A special banquet in honor of the Enthronement of
Bishop Maksim is being planned for Autumn (mid September or mid October)
and will be hosted by Saint Stevens Cathedral in Alhambra. Further
information and details of Banquet will be forthcoming.
The Holy Assembly of Bishops of the Serbian Orthodox
Church elected the new bishop of Western America on May 27, 2006.
His Grace, Rt. Rev. Dr. Maksim, was born on June 27,
1968 in Foca, the son of Protopresbyter-Stavrofor Lazar and Protinica
Radmila Vasiljevic. He received the monastic tonsure at the hands of the
Bishop of Zahum-Hercegovina, Rt. Rev. Dr. Atanasije (Jeftic) on August
18, 1996 at the Monastery Tvrdos. He received the monastic name MAXIMUS,
after the great Confessor, Saint Maximus of Constantinople who lived in
the 7th century and was a renown theologian and defender of the Orthodox
faith. On July 18, 2004, he was consecrated bishop of Hum and Vicar to
the Metropolitan of Dabro-Bosna in the Cathedral Church in Sarajevo by
His Holiness, Patriarch Pavle. Bishop Maksim holds a doctorate in the
field of Dogmatics and Patristics from the University of Athens, speaks
five languages: Serbian, Greek, Russian, English and French. He is
accomplished in both art and music, having studied Byzantine painting
and music in Athens. He also studied at the French Academy of Fine Arts
(Beaux-arts) in Paris. At the time of his election to the See of Western
America, he was professor at the Theological Faculty in Belgrade and
editor of its Theological Journal.
His Grace, Bishop Longin has directed that the above be
announced from the pulpit on Sunday, and printed in your bulletin,
newsletters and websites.
